“Year of the Horse”

Based on Blue Colt and depicting a horse standing on three legs, Year of the Horse features deep blue and jade green in its patina, with transitions to black patina on the legs, tail and nose. A band of “opal gemstone patina” wraps around the torso. A polished bronze bird adorns the rump of the horse, stretching over his back.

As artists, the collaboration of Gene and Rebecca Tobey was a breath of fresh air. The two created a style of art that is entirely unique and distinctive. Because of its ingenious simplification of sculptural imagery, and use of sgraffito, the Tobey design is instantly recognizable. Gene & Rebecca created their own symbolic language pulling from Native American imagery and their own experiences.
