“New Life”

by: Kim Obrzut

$4,400.00

Many Centuries ago, Hopi women created vessels to carry liquid, seeds and food. These were made using only the bare hands and hand-made tools taken from the natural environment. These vessels known today as pottery, were cleverly created using the four elements: earth, water, air, and fire. Pottery is a distinctive Hopi artistry, which reflects unique Hopi life. It was created for everyday life as well as for sacred ceremonies and even for their last journey to the next world.
The vessels were carefully decorated with ancient symbols, echoing stories from their ancestors. These are visual symbols of nature, ceremonies and objects that are believed to lead to a happy life. The origin of this age old symbol system represents the culture of the Hopi people.
She has no face, which symbolizes the egalitarian society of the Hopi people, and not an individual. The Hopi thought is; One Mind, One Body, and One Spirit. This artwork is sold out please contact the gallery for more information on commissions.
