Greg English has a natural eye for light source and believes “knowing how to blend light and shadow” is the key to drawing the observer into his paintings. When viewing Greg’s work one would never believe he has had no formal training. His passion for detail and realism surfaced around the age of 10 as he drew and sketched everything that caught his eye. Today, trained by experience and natural ability, Greg’s oil paintings of Native American pottery, as well as his pencil drawings of a variety of subjects, are marvelous examples of conviction, understanding and dedication of both interpretation and realism. Raised in Arizona, born in Illinois, Greg has always been exposed to art and the particular beauty of the Southwest throughout his childhood. His mother is famed Cheryl English, an oil painter showing in galleries throughout the U.S., as well as internationally. As a child Greg often traveled with her to art shows in Santa Fe. On one trip he met an old man at the Laguna Pueblo plaza, and was invited to the man’s humble home to hear his story. Greg still remembers the experience as a magical and inspiring one, where he encountered many of the subjects he would later paint. With instruction and guidance from Cheryl, he left his career in customer service in 1998 to pursue painting full-time, and was met with immediate success. In May of 1998, Greg participated in the Phippen Memorial Art Show in Prescott, Arizona where he captured a second place prize in “oils” and a third place prize in “People’s Choice Award”.
